PORTAMENTO makes umbrellas worth choosing, each built around a single design idea. Umbrellas first, and for now, only umbrellas.
Meet PRISM 01The name
Portamento, n. the way one carries oneself.
In Italian, portamento describes bearing: the way a person holds themselves, walks into a room, carries what they have chosen. It is noticed long before anything is said.
We named the studio for it because an umbrella is, above all, something you carry. Carried well, it becomes part of how you are seen. Carried without thought, it undoes the rest.
Every PORTAMENTO umbrella is made to be carried with intention.
The belief
Most everyday objects stop being designed.
Most everyday objects stop being designed the moment they become useful. An umbrella protects you from rain, so no one asks it to do anything else. PORTAMENTO starts from a different belief: that the objects we carry without thinking are worth noticing. PRISM 01 is the first expression of that belief, not the last.
Why umbrellas
The least designed thing we carry.
It is one of the few things almost everyone carries and almost no one chooses. We take care over a coat, a bag, a pair of shoes, and then reach for whatever umbrella is closest to the door.
We think that's a strange gap. An umbrella is held at eye level, in the rain, in the sun, in photographs. It deserves the same attention as everything else you step out in.
Each PORTAMENTO umbrella starts from one idea: a material, a way light behaves, a silhouette. If we can't explain why a design exists in a sentence, we don't make it. And the idea never comes at the expense of the object. Design can't make up for a weak frame, a stiff mechanism or a seam that leaks.

How we work
A few rules we keep.
Fewer, better.
We release very few designs, each with a reason to exist. No catalogue, no fifteen colourways.
Good before beautiful.
Every PORTAMENTO umbrella has to be a genuinely good umbrella before it is anything else.
Made to last.
We choose materials and construction for how they will hold up in the fifth monsoon, not how they look on the first day.
Slow to change.
We would rather make one design well for years than a new one every season. No seasonal colourways.
